Area Information

Stillwell Is A Part Of "Green County Oklahoma"

Created in 1907 from the lands of the Cherokee Nation's Going Snake and Flint Districts, Adair County was named in honor of Watt Adair, one of the first Cherokee settlers of Indian Territory.

The town of Stilwell was named after Arthur E. Stilwell, the first superintendent of the KC Southern Railroad. The town was formed in 1897 and has been the county seat since 1910.

Stilwell is also near the geographical center of the county and first appeared on the map in 1895, about the time the railroad builders reached that point, although a post office by the name of Flint, a general store and a few houses had been in existence in that neighborhood for many years.

Area attractions include the Strawberry Festival, the Bell Indian Pow Wow, a 3-day rodeo, Cherokee National Holiday and more. Points of interest within Adair County include the site near Westville of the Old Baptist Missionary Church, built by the "Trail of Tears" Cherokees in 1836.

A marker stands near the community of Watts recognizing Fort Wayne, a military post established in 1838 and abandoned in 1842, although it was reactivated and was the site of a Civil War battle in 1862.

Adair County boasts excellent school systems with numerous rural elementary schools, 4 high schools, a vo-tech school and more.

Area colleges include Northeastern State University, Bacone College, Conners Agricultural College, Arkansas University and John Brown University in Arkansas.

Medical services include a 57-bed community hospital in Stilwell with life flight capabilities to major hospitals. Also serving the area is the Wilma Mankiller Indian Health Center and the Medical Center in Westville as well as several home health agencies and nursing homes.

Stilwell Oklahoma, the seat of Adair County and the "Strawberry Capital of the World" is in northeastern Oklahoma surrounded by numerous lakes, rivers and spring-fed streams. A part of "Green County Oklahoma," Stilwell is within 18 miles of beautiful Lake Tenkiller, 25 miles from the Illinois River plus Baron Fork, Little Lee's Creek, Evansville Creek, Sallisaw Creek and other creeks plus numerous watershed lakes.

Hunting, fishing and water sports are a large part of the area's attractions. Deer, wild turkey and other game are in abundance. Stilwell is also home to Adair State Park, which is adjacent to the Adair County Fair Grounds.

If you desire a slower paced rural hometown environment, this is the place! Come and check out Stilwell and Adair County. We're here to help with your real estate needs.
